Important Considerations When Choosing Bay Windows

Bay windows are a great addition to any home, thanks to their unique benefits such as increased natural light, ventilation and additional space. Switching to bay windows involves a few considerations; Renewal by Andersen® of Knoxville takes a closer look at them below.

Important Considerations When Choosing Bay Windows

Window Styles

Bay windows are a combination of three or four smaller windows, with a wide center flanked by two narrower windows. The angled bay window is perhaps the most familiar shape, with two narrow windows projecting at 30 or 45 degrees, forming a trapezoidal shape. You don’t have to stick to the same shape if your home style calls for something else, though. Box bay windows, for instance, feature 90-degree side windows and work well with contemporary architecture.

A typical bay window configuration consists of two operable side windows and a central picture window. This gives the homeowner the best of both worlds. The central window provides the view, while the side windows provide ventilation. The side windows are usually taller than they are wide, so horizontally oriented styles like sliding windows may not be suitable; casement and double-hung windows are more practical. The central windows can likewise be replaced with operable windows.

Window Size

Any window, in general, can be switched with another style. When it comes to bay windows, however, size is an important consideration, particularly the width of the wall opening. Tall windows, such as standalone double-hung units, may not be suitable for bay windows because of the proportion. However, mulled double-hung windows are a perfect candidate for bay window replacement, as the resulting wall opening would be appropriately wide.

Materials

Bay windows extend beyond the exterior wall, so the materials that will be used for building it should be carefully considered. If the projecting space will be used for seating and/or storage, it should consist of a strong material that will support the additional weight. The use of insulating material is also important to avoid drafts in the winter. This is why Renewal by Andersen replacement windows feature Fibrex® material and High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass. The resulting bay windows won’t just be beautiful but also energy-efficient.
